I purchaced a mid 70's 25hpp evenrude from a friend a few weeks ago. He said that he went through the carb and ran it before he sold it to me. It would not crank when I got it. I got new spark plugs it sparked just fine. the lean rich fuel ajustment was disconected I didn't know what it was and I turned it. Now the plugges foul with oil every time I try to crank it. and I wont Idle and what running it does do it sputters and skippes. how do I ajust the fuel mixture to the right spot and, is tha the only problem?

Dave,

Can you go into a little more detail about the
the lean rich fuel ajustment was disconected
deal? Did the motor sit for a long time before he ran it and you bought it? Describe the fuel adjustment you are referring to.

Hello David and Welcome to the forum.

You have a pre 1974 25 HP twin, VERY good motor. The lean adjustment jet should be adjusted properly as follows:

Remove the linck, by pulling upper plactic arm off. Carefully screw needle in till its seated gently. Overturquing will ruin seat or needle. From this position turn 1 1/2 turns out, this is initial setting. With the motor on boat, warmed up ( run it wot for minute or so, and return to iddle in gear ) continue to let the boat iddle foreward in gear. By small turns of 1/8 at a time screw needle in untill motor starts to miss or cut out. Screw needle back 1/8 turn out again, and within this 1/8 turn is your best setting. This can only be done in water, and with boat moving due to load and back pressure. If the adjusting makes iddle speed too high or low, correct iddle speed during the adjusting. But this will only work if motor runs properly, ignition is good, points are set at 0.020 and the little roller linck that opens throttle does not start to turn throttle butterfly, before it is between the two marks on the cam on stator plate.

Plugs will always be a little oily on these after iddle, it doesne matter if ignition is ok and spark can jump a 5/16 testgap. Post again in this thread if still problems, good luck

Sorry to bump this up from the depths. Could someone please confirm if the roller link touches the stator plate between the two lines or just after ??
