Re: 89 Johnson GT 150.....Please help....No spark...

I just went through the same thing on my "87" 70 horse. Best thing I can say is get a copy of the manual.

I went through and checked a few things and then on a suggestion replaced the powerpack and it wasn't that. When I got the manual out and did some testing with ye olde multi tester, it turns out it was the sensor coil, and had to change the timer base. It is way too lengthy and complex to explain all the tests here.

Get the book and good luck.

Last time I had the same problem it was as simple as pulling the safety lanyard out and putting it back in. I guess the switch was a little corroded and when I put it back in it made contact and fired up. Lucky I guess. Good luck. I always try to eliminate the simple things first.

I havent tried the kill switch yet.Do you know whether or not the engine will still crank if that switch is bad?Or when the kill switch is activated (or corroded in this case) does it not allow the motor to crank at all?

The engine will still turn if the switch is activated. You won't have any spark. I replaced the switch in the control box and that fixed the problem. The switch cost approx. $20 and it's not to difficult to change.
