ThanksLooks like you're on top of it. Definitely consider removing biltemas finest and sealing up wire after testing though!
Also, keep in mind- it will probably pull/prime through a small external tank without an anti siphon a fair bit easier than it will from your internal tank with spring loaded anti siphon ball. So you'll be testing for air- but the pump not priming itself issue could suddenly go away when its drinking with no resistance. It also might have less vacuum in the line to pull air bubbles through a tiny leak. Perhaps put antisiphon on end of line before you dip it in ext tank to make 'all things equal' with pump intake resistance.

Good point re. smaller tank and the lesser resistance..hm . Until yesterday I actually had just a regular brass fitting (without a checkvalve/ ball inside) attached to the pick up tube
