Success!!! The diagram was slightly different than reality. Bolt #38 actually goes in from the top down. If you pry the starter outward it allows enough clearance to get a socket in there with an extension to take the bolt out. I magnetized my socket so the bolt wouldn't drop into the hard to reach places.
