I asked them is this genuine GM or aftermarket, they did respond quickly and said it is Sierra aftermarket....so....seeing as how some aftermarket modules aren't always the best, what is the thought about this? Can we even source the original GM units and modules, or is this what's available now? If so I might be better off sticking with points! Especially because this kit is a bit over $600!

Nothing special about an ignition module. Simply encapsulated high voltage contact relay(s).

You just need a contact to trigger the relay for each cylinder. Pertronix make a wild variety of distributor conversion kits for under $200.

I upgraded the ignition in my golf cart with GM HEI module for a Chevy Nova and a ignition coil from a Mercuy outboard. A common swap over for motor cycles as well

From what I've read (been keeping this in the back of my mind for when my TB V eventually dies) the sierra module has a higher failure rate. The GM module is NLA though so you kind of have to take the gamble if you want electronic... points are fine imo.

that's my conclusion!
I have spare OEM advance springs for the Prestolite and a couple of sets of points and condensers. Also have a complete spare Prestolite!
They were decent units, very simple mechanical advance distributors.

That looks like a good bit of kit for 600 holes.....but if they really are not that reliable maybe not .
There are heaps of options re retro fitting a pointless system to your original dizzy ( as long as its not to worn . I have fitted a few kits to cars that have had enough spindle wear to make setting points gap pointless, fitting an optical or magnetic trigger gets you another life out of an unrebuildable dizzy .
I have an Allison ( now marketed by Crane ) unit that is over 30 years old .......never missed a beat , and it can handle a real meaty coil .
I would suggest that pretty much all points type ignition components come from China now ....despite the local packaging ,and I have heard some of you guys bemoaning the quality of points ignition components particularly condensers ............and , ........struggling to think of any manufacturer still fitting points as standard ............I got nothing

I have used the Delco EST on both my 3 liter and 4.3 liter engines. I like them a lot. No starting problems because of humidity and very precise timing. No more resistor wire to lower the voltage. No more maintenance. It just works.
