Hey all,
I have a 1985 4 HP with no spark. Ran a few years ago when I last started and now I'm trying to fix it up again. Don't know how these point and condenser style ignitions work so here I am. Tried doing the old grounding the spark plug trick with no spark. Plugs are good, grounded them using another outboard to test them. Popped the flywheel off and everything looks pretty new. Any ideas?

Points and condensers all work the same, why are you baffled by these?

Anywho, the real men will be by shortly to instruct you how to learn!

common magneto for ages start by just cleaning up the points with 200 grit paper then clean wih carb cleaner or acetone and retry. your coils are the newer kind and should show no cracks whatsoever.

rotate & set the rub block on the points cam at the highest point and check or adj. points to .020 gap should be good enough. Add 2 drops of oil on the small felt pad.

if no spark measure the ohms value from the boots to the engine block it should se 4-8 Koms approx.

change gear oil... you carb may or may not need an overall depending if the engine was stored
properly (short term I leave mine full of fuel.... long term I run them dry
water pump impeller should be changed depending how many years ago it was stored... it doesn't hurt anyway ... up to you
check utubes ... lots of info
this free book for older engines contains all the info you need to since carbs and magnetos are mostly the same...the ignition section on old jw cd ad qd..... models of the 50s and 60s is the same. great reading anyway. print or store locally
