So.. I've been working on this old 1975 Johnson , rebuilt the carb , new impeller , Split the gear housing after draining what looked like rusty oil . I could not get the shift rod to move at all. So, I completely dismantled the gear housing (carefully) , inspected all of the gears , all looks great ! But,, I just could not get the shift rod to move at all ,even with a bare case . Placed the top half on a vise and tapped out the shift rod with a brass hammer , in the process . I think , I might have bent it . Next went on E bay and bought a " *New OEM* 0750 OMC Johnson/Evinrude lower shift rod 309592" It looks just like my old one same , it's has the bend in it .. Are supposed to be bent from the 3 detents to the coupler detent ? Or did I just get another messed up shift rod ?

Remove / inspect shift rod bushing.----Replace o-ring.----Hard to believe a hammer was needed on this rod.-----Install the shift rod.----Assemble and test shifting.

Yes , I understand that I will be needing to replace both shift rod bushing & O-ring . But , my question is ;Does the shift rod have a bend in it from the the factory ? The picture is of the "New OEM" shift rod that I got off e-bay . Thanks

I would have to look at one of over 15 shift rods that I have here.--Later today perhaps.-----Yes , some OMC shift rods do have a slight bend.

i doubt the small bend is the problem... just make it straight if you think it is.

Looked at one and it has a slight bend.----This is not an issue as stated.----Is the part of the driveshaft above the pinion in good shape?----Is bushing above the pinion in good shape?

That is what I'm working on . I have the case soaking in soapy water to clean . Now I am trying figure out , How to knockout that bushing . It seems like , I should be able to tap it out with a punch from the opposite side but , I'm having no luck . Only seems like I'm either tapping on inside of case or going threw the the bushing and coming out like shift rod does.

I have the tool to remove that bushing.----Or run a tap in there for 3 threads and pull it out.---use 5/16-NC tap.-----Or replace the o-ring without removing the bushing.----Yes it can be done!
