I have a 30' Reinell that has bad stringers. What I would like to know is if it would be better to drill hoes in the top of the fiberglass covered stringers and soak the stringers with thinned epoxy and then sandwich the stringers with plywood and glass cloth. Or should I dig out the wood and replace with new plywood. I personally like the idea of soaking the stringers and sandwich with plywood, epoxy and cloth as I think this woiuld be stronger. Comments?
Thanks,
Tom

Re: Stringer repair

Personally I'd cut the tops off the fiberglass covering and dig the rotten wood out and replace it. Trying to use epoxy to strengthen wet rotten wood will not work.

Big boat = big project, but if you are going to keep it, do it right.

I dont like that method off yours. Just do it good and replace evreything the fiberglass and plywood.

Re: Stringer repair

In my humble opinion there is nothing wrong with leaving the old glass. Now having said that....

It is important that the new wood adhear to the hull, although there would be multiple ways of making sure of that (thickend epoxy in the gap of the old glass perhaps, or wrapping the wood with glass and resin before putting it in the created slot), I think it will be a lot easier just to cut the old stuff out, grind down with some 50 grit or rougher, re-wood and re-glass.

During my rebuild I thought about leaving the old glass and decided it was more effort than it was worth, besides I got a bunch of new blades for my sawsall :)

Peace to all.

Ed.

Re: Stringer repair

I have a 23' Formula with a partially rotted transom and rotted stringers extending about 6' from the stern. I like the sound of the pourable seacast system because there is no new wood to rot again.

The biggest problem I see is removing the rotted wood through the top of the stringers...the wood is only about 1/2" thick.

Anybody used the Seacast system yet?
