Hi Guys. Hope you can help. I just got a Mercury 150 hp serial number 0G076687. A 1996 I THINK! The flywheel has been removed. I purchased a new flywheel. This engine does not have a Keyway in the shaft. Just many splines. How do I know where to seat the flywheel so it is in the correct position for timing?

Good question.....gotta have a place to start........TDC on the engine could be established by the #1 piston at the top of it's stroke, L engine would be top piston, V maybe left bank top. Then the "trigger" magnet on the flywheel should be passing the pickup coil (with the throttle at idle). That would be a place to start.

A lot of those Mercs have splines that only fit one way. It was roughly a "W" shaped spline. If your motor has full splines, then you need to accurately set TDC of #1 piston with (a dial indicator is best), and then set the flywheel to indicate TDC on the timing decal. There is usually some adjustment on the flywheel cover timing pointer.

Now that you mention that I think I have experienced such......trying to get the flywheel on the crankshaft and it wouldn't go on, after several attempts looking at the interface and realizing what you said. Just don't remember what engine on what type of equipment I experienced the design.
