I was putting my boat on the trailer last night and the current was fairly strong and put the boat up on the side rail of the trailer. After getting it home and looking in the daylight I noticed the gel coat had tore down to the fiberglass. What is the best way to fix it? Will it sink if I put it back in the water? I can email a pic if anyone thinks they can help, I cannot figure out how to post a pic in this message.

I can see it. OUCH. Break out a sading pad and some Marine Tex. Its gonna be a lota work but its fixable.

Sand those holes and dish them a bit to hold the fiberglass. Mix some milled or chopped fiberglass into some epoxy and put this in the holes that are through the gelcoat into the boat!
Make it real stiff so it does not run out.

Re: Trailering Accident!

Should I use the Marine Tex Epoxy Putty Repair Kit? Any idea on the amount I will need? Would a 2 oz work or should I get the 14 oz? Thanks.

I have filled some gouges in my keel similar but not as deep as those. Marine Tex did the job. Sands smooth and if you get white, it will match fairly well.

Don't forget the plastic gloves, and some plastic spreaders (like for bondo). Make sure you press it in firmly with your finger before smearing a smooth layer.

Get the "large" size in the can. You'll make good use of it.

I have patched nearly identical scrapes on my hull where it missed a roller and caught the roller support with MarineTex White. They've held up pretty good.

Thanks for all the replies. As soon as I get around to fixing it, I will post the pics of the outcome. Does anyone have an estimate om how much putty I should buy? I will be sure to resize the next pic also!

Back to the other half of what you asked; No, she won’t sink but I wouldn’t put her back in the water until she is repaired.
