Yet another floor, sealing, drain, and foam question

I have searched..but didn't come up with anything.

I have a 1984 20' Galaxy Cuddy Cabin with Mercury 185 inboard and a Mercruiser Stern Drive.

The front 3/4 of the deck floor was replaced by the previous owner, but not the back 1/4. The previous floor work was actually done correct and looks good. The rear was going to be done (2 part job) but the previous owner, for whatever reason, didn't do it.

I have since removed the rear section of the floor and actually have the new pieces cut and ready to go in.

I did remove two globs of foam from each side that was holding water...the spray or pour in type. The foam globs were each about the size of a 1/2 inflated basketball.

The area is supposed to be sealed and I figured water probably got into the spaces before the floor was replaced.

I want to make sure the compartments are sealed as they do not drain into the bilge.

Is there a waterproof foam that I can fill the entire compartment with..providing flotation and support..as well as knowing the compartments are sealed?

Is there something else that I can spray into the compartments to seal them?

OR....

Can or Should I drill through the stringer from each compartment (in the rear) by the bilge area and glass in a pvc drain that allows any water that gets into the compartments to drain into the bilge?

I of course would use some type of flotation in the compartments...closed cell foam that will not absorb water or sealed antifreeze jugs (sealing the caps on with some type of caulking.) I figure that I can get at least 4 jugs in the area under the floor...this will actually be alot more flotation than the globs of foam originally provided.

OR....

Should I just seal up the compartment the best I can, install a small bilge pump in each compartment and have access through a deck plate to check, replace, repair them?

Also using the closed cell foam or jug flotation method here.

I don't "think" I will have a problem with water getting into the compartments, but I want to KNOW FOR CERTAIN THAT NO WATER STANDS IN THE COMPARTMENTS. This is why I was thinking the drain into the bilge or actually installing seperate bilge pumps.

Any advice....thanks!

BTW.... just found this forum the other day...can't beleive I have gone this long without it!

Is there a waterproof foam that I can fill the entire compartment with..providing flotation and support..as well as knowing the compartments are sealed?
Yes the 2 pound 2 part pour foam is virtually water proof. Nothing is totally waterproof.

IMHO opinion bildge pumps would be overkill. The two hole mentioned are a two way street. If water were in the bildge you left a hole to get to the compartment.

I would suggest you pour foam till it fills the compartment. Seal the compartment as best you can.
And enjoy the boat.

BTW WELCOME TO i BOATS!!!

I kind of have the same question. So, I am watching to see the answers. When I took my floor apart. There were three sections in the underfloor. The two outer areas were "sealed" from the bilge. However, previous owners just drilled straight into the floor to mount seats and didn't seal the screws. When water built up in the areas, there was no way to drain it. You could tilt the boat nose up for a week in hot weather and still hear water slosh. I was thinking along the same lines of putting in the drain through the stringers.

I will be watching for the words of experience to let us know if this is a good idea or not.

AK Chappy

I would allow all water a path to the bilge area that way if it does get in, it will drain to the back where you can take care of it, no maintence that way and you know theres no standing water.

-John

Re: Yet another floor, sealing, drain, and foam question

Definately install drain holes in the stringers. I put drain holes in all my stringers, then foamed the voids completely, leaving the center bilge open for drainage. This way, the foam can never hold water because it will always want to drain to the center bilge. The most important part of the rebuild is making sure the wood is a sealed as possible, and keeping the boat covered when not in use. Even a moderatly constructed boat will last for many many years if rain and snow is kept out of it.

Okay..just to make sure I have this right.

Leave the center section alone...the center bilge area, and fill in the "sealed" side areas with foam after drilling drain holes in them to go to the bilge area.

Would one hole on each side (each stringer) be enough for drainage?

The picture below is what I had in mind. The yellow being foam with the blue lines being the drain holes.

Should I insert PVC pipe into holes in the stringer...to aid in sealing and drainage?

Should I leave a small void around the drain area? Meaning...leave say 6 inches around the drain holes in the stinger free from foam?

Should I also install another set of drain holes closer to the bow?

Thanks for the help....the boat repair / rebuild is new to me.

Just an idea..use one-way seacocks for the drain holes...make sure you seal the wood that you drilled thru...what good is it to completely encase the wood to then drill holes in and not treat the exposed wood.

-JustMrWill
