Hey everyone I'm new to this forum but have used it many times in the past. Lots of great info on here.

I have tried searching for the answer to my question but haven't be able to find a clear answer. So I thought I would make an account and make my first post.

Currently I have a 454 attached to a Bravo drive. I looking at swapping out the 454 for a 502. From what I have read a sterndrive 502 will swap in pretty straight forward.

Now I have come across a 502 that was from an inboard boat If I remove the transmission and put on my 454 engine coupler will that motor be ready to be used as a stern drive with my bravo? I know I might need to modify the fuel system if the 502 doesn't have a mechanical fuel pump.
But I have read somewhere that the starter location is different based on weather its and inboard or sterndrive. Is that true? Does it matter when its used as an sterndrive?

Just to clear any confusion. I'm not trying to convert a boat from an inboard to a stern drive. I am trying to use an inboard motor in my sterndrive boat.

I appreciate any info that can be given.

I didn't think the 8.1L came carbureted. Thought they were all injected. Everything should bolt on....

Thanks for the quick reply! Now I'm a big curious. Is the starter location different for an inboard vs stern-drive?

Can be, but in most cases no, but also depends if it is LH or RH rotation. So long as your a standard LH motor you should be able to direct swap without an issue

an I/O starter is bolted to the block , a inboard one is bolted to the rear housing(bell housing) and is called an aft entry.and the rotation is the opposite rotation of the motor . Meaning a standard rotation motor uses a reverse rotation starter .
The flywheel is changed because of the ring gear position on the flywheel. a rear entry will not engage the teeth of a standard flywheel

Rick, the 496 is the 8.1 liter (gen VII block) and is only EFI (aftermarket does have a carb intake) the 502/8.2 is a gen V or gen VI block and came carbureted or fuel injected.

jetskier2313 when wiring an electric fuel pump, make sure to use an oil pressure switch and relay like the factory did.

Thanks for the education. Interesting reading on the history of that motor. I have the 8.1 in my pickup. I had mixed up the cubic inch on it.

Howdy,

Welcome aboard!

You didn't indicate the year model but if your Bravo raw water pump has the mount on it, you can use the standard mechanical fuel pump just like this one: http://airtexproducts.com/single-product/?partnumber=60932&id=98756AX

It's available from just about any autoparts retailer that also has an Airtex Marine catalog. (Airtex is the Mercury Marine OEM for this fuel pump)

Mine has been on my GEN VI 454 Bravo for about 13 years.

Cheers,

Rick
