Quick question, when you replace the long block, does the serial number for the engine change? Meaning the new one would be different than the old long block?

Yes and No
The serial number indicates the motors configuration when built. A listing of all the parts used to make the original motor. The number helps tell anyone looking at the motor what they would find if nothing has changed.

If you replaced the long block with the same vintage and used all your same external stuff, then its really the same configuration. If anything was changed, it still helps with a starting point

if it was a brand new mercruiser motor installed by a mercruiser licensed and supported dealer, then they would cover it

also, what caused the motor to blow? inquiring minds would like to know.

Are asking about the serial number because you are in a State that requires engine serial numbers to be registered?

Can`t wait to hear how it was being operated before the failure, Failure to read the instructions on a new motor has lead to multiple failures
