I am having a problem getting my boat of the ramp now. When I shift into gear the engine slows and cuts off. I have been reading this forum and everyone says to adjust the idle mix screw with the engine in forward gear. I am not doubting what they say and I will try this method but how do i get it in forward gear and make the adjustments if the engine cuts off? I can start the engine in gear but I know I should not. I have the idle screw on the carbs set to 1.5 turns. The 1.5 comes from when i tighten the idle screw clockwise and it stops NOT tight but stops is where my starting point for 1.5 turns counter-clockwise. I have studied the manual like a bible and have followed all instructions.

I did my timing by turning the flywheel with a wrench and watching for spark. I have all new ignition from stator to coils. Only thing that is not new is the switch. Compression is 110 110 110 107 110 105.

You should set the timing with a timing light. No other way is accurate enough. After you have done that, adjust the idle speed so the motor spins at about 900 RPM. That should allow you to adjust the idle mixture.

So I should set the idle to 900 in natural first then try to shift?

When you adjust the idle speed you have to allow the linkage to move freely. This will entail unlocking the cable retainer and removing the cable barrel. Once the the idle speed is correct, you may have to adjust the barrel so there is a slight preload on the cable. That mans the cable is pushing the linkage against the idle stop, Too much though will make it difficult to shift out of forward or reverse into neutral

Sure, 900 in neutral is fine.

I will set the idle to 900. I was reading older post and was advised to get it to idle around 700-800 before I shift. It was working before at 950-1100 because I could not idle below 800 now I can with the new ignition. I will let you know how 900 turns out.

Thanks I got that part good, maybe my problem is letting the motor idle too low in neutral before i shift is the problem. Before I clean the carbs with old ignition last year it idle at 950 1100 in neutral and 650-750 in forward gear which was my trolling speed. It bumped in gear!
