i know this has been asked a million times but as some as you may know I'm pulling a 350 from my boat and bought a truck 350.

there's evidence of my current marine engine being replaced just by the way things are painted and reinstalled.

just talked to a marine mechanic and he said that motor I pulled from boat HAS to be a vortec and the Chevy 350 TBI truck engine won't work.

any insight on this ?? I know you guys have done a hundred of these swaps and I'm just lookin for some clarification on setting me on the right track.

do I need to keep my marine heads and marine cams?

do I need marine spark plugs and brass frost plugs??

anything else I need to know before I start putting it back together ?

Marine components required to keep from going boom:

head gaskets need to be stainless
water pump if fresh water cooled
alternator and starter
ignition
core plugs must be brass if fresh water cooled
carburetor and fuel pump
TBI is TBI same system used in marine as in automotive - you can either swap in your marine carb or figure out how to hook up the TBI system. I don't know what that would take. Never tried to install one that wasn't already installed.

Ayuh,..... IF yer motor has Vortec heads, Ya, I'd get 'em rebuilt, 'n use 'em,....

The 350TBI could also have Vortec heads, ya don't say what it is,....

Ya should change the intake manifold, 'n use a 4bbl. carb,.... if it were Me,.....

If ya understand motor terminology, the truck, 'n boat motors run virtually the same Long Block,.....

'bout everything bolted onto the Long Block, oughta be marine rated,....
Once that's done, ya got a Bobtail motor,....

Truck and marine cam are so close, I wouldn't both changing the cam. Change the core plugs to brass, pull the heads and replace the head gaskets with stainless steel or composite and you have yourself a marine long block. Use ALL the other accessories from the old boat engine (that includes the intake and carb, exhaust manifolds and elbows, all wiring harness, distributor, alternator, starter, fuel pump and water pump, flywheel, coupler and flywheel housing, engine mounts) and you're good to go.

But you do need to verify that both blocks are the same ie, Vortec. Vortec intakes have 8 bolts. Non-Vortec have 12...

it would help to know what year you are working on, and what year the truck motor is that you pulled.

for the 350 / 5.7 motors, there were changes along the way, so you want to stay within a bracket of changes below are some of the major changes.

1985 - first year of 1-piece rear seal
1986 - first year of perimeter bolts
1988 - first year of roller cam
1996 - first year of vortec heads and a number of other changes
2000 - valve train changes

however as everyone pointed out. brass core plugs (they are not frost plugs), stainless MLS head gasket for the long block. then marine waterpump, accessories, exhaust.

if your marine mechanic is saying you currently have vortec and the truck motor doesnt, then I would listen to him. that would indicate that your boat is a 1996 or newer and your truck motor is earlier than that.

Ayuh,..... In 79/ 80, the dipstick switched sides of the motor, so the oil pans are different,....

Oil filters were added in '60 or so I believe,.......
Always been in the same place, 'n always the same filter since '62 or so,.... ;) :D
