Hi Everyone, After a survey and mechanic's evaluation, I will be picking up a 1998 Maxum 2700 SCR with a 7.4L merc and bravo III duoprop. Any thoughts on this engine/drive combo? I would like to make sure I am not buying something with inherent problems...like my 470.

The dry weight is 7800 so a 7.4 w/B3 is the minimum I would have and they didn't offer an 8.2L. The 7.4 B3 that came with my 9500 dry weight 27 foot Formula was a very bad setup. I replaced the it with an 8.2L

Would suggest taking a few friends with you for a test ride and see how it does. If that works out just do your overall checks and you should be good.

The 470 you had experience with is a turf of an engine. The 7.4 (454) is a great motor, and coupled with a B3 is a great combination.

Not as peppy as it's 8.2 liter big brother, however a good combination

My 270 Sundancer has a listed dry weight of 7500 pounds so we are pretty similar though I am a couple years newer and by what I looked up, that year Maxum could have a '97 power package so it could be MPI model exactly like mine or could be tbi or even carb which I think the horsepower is a little less for tbi/carb.

So assuming it is MPI, you should find that propulsion enough to be in the 30+ mph mark though it will consume a lot of gas especially at higher rpm so be prepared for that.

Thanks guys. Do you know if that year 7.4 had a computer on it? I have been told it would store info that would be helpful to a new owner?

Being a 1998 it could be between MEFI-1, 2 or 3, with a serial number we should be able to narrow it down. In any case if the computer has problems there will be codes, and provide hours, max rpm's, amount of hours at certain rpms; that is if the ECM has not been replaced or repogramed
