My early 70s 120 I/o merc has lotsa water in the oil, a major milk shake...I guess I bought a lemon. It's been a real challenge to find an affordable running used engine, There are a few guys wanting to unload their diseased old clunker boat that hasn't been run for several years, for $1500, but I'm not wanting to again buy someone else's problem, and I don't have $1500. I've noticed a few posts where car/truck engines have been installed after being "marine-ized". Also saw one where an s10 intake manifold was put onto a 130 (I think). So..is an s-10 4 banger the same type of block as the 120/130/140? If so my existing engine can donate a number of items. Or as a good alternative can anyone direct me to a running used 120. My out drive is, I think, pre alfa.

Sorry to say that the 120-140 Mercruiser engine is only produced as an industrial motor. Water pumps, forklifts, that kind of thing. You won't find one in a car or pickup.

Often it is easier and cheaper to find a donor boat with the motor you need than to purchase a motor used. Buy a water rotted boat with a running motor, pull said motor and junk the boat.

Best of luck.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... Nope,... The automotive I4 is a Pontiac based motor, not at all the same as the Chevy based motor used in boats,.....

Just alittle Fyi,... a runnin' 120/ 140 hp motor, bobtail, ready to drop in, will bring a Grand,....

A whole boat for $1500. is cheap parts,....

Pull the motor and have a look, if it's a cracked block well OK, but if it's a blown head gasket not so much.

Need to pull the motor anyway to see what you have, or at least pull the heads if you don't see a crack outside

The only time the 2.5l that is used by Merc was put in a car was in the early 60's for a couple years in the Nova. The 3.0l never was put in a car. The 2.5l that is common in cars is not the same. The easy way to tell the difference is that the 2.5l that is common in cars has the intake and exhaust on different sides of the motor. The 120/140 Merc have them on the same side.

welcome aboard.

agreed, the mercruiser 2.5 liter is the same 151 that came in the 1962 chevy 2. I do not believe it was used much after 1969 or so, however lived on until the mid 80's as an industrial motor. the marine motors also come from the industrial motor division.

the 3.0 is a stroked version, and only came in boats, gensets, trash pumps, hydraulic power units, etc.

you should be able to find a pre 1990 mercury, omc, or volvo 3.0 motor or 2.5 motor running for about $300. complete with outdrive in a rotten boat hull for about $800-$1000

just look around on craigslist, etc.

So...one is saying get the complete engine with outdrive. The other says look for a 3.0 engine. Will any 130/140 3.0 be compatible with my outdrive or not? If some yes and some no what questions do I need to ask, ie: I'm guessing shaft dimensions and splines could an issue? Thanks again for your help.

That marine engine will be the same engine in any marine application whether mercruiser, omc or Volvo penta, You will need to put all your "marine" parts of your engine onto the new engine if not a mercruiser but that is it...then it is just plug and play. You will want to be able to do a compression test to a used engine before you install, at very least look at plugs to make sure they all were burning the same color. Best case is if you can hear it run on muffs to look at oil pressure. But even doing all that you may still get a bad motor. Good luck.

If your outdrive is good you don't need to get a new one. But like Harleyman points out you will need to transfer the externals if it is not a Merc. They all used the same block but the externals are different.

Ayuh,.... Do ya understand the differences 'tween a bare block, a Long Block, 'n a complete Bobtail motor,..??

To fix yer boat, ya probably need a bare block, which could be used to swap all yer internals, 'n externals into/ onto,...
Sounds cheap, til ya figure the machine work probably needed,.....
'n you'd need a bare block of 'bout the same vintage,...

A Long Block, is the complete motor with all the internals, but no externals on it,.....
It might be yer Best way out, a long block 120hp, 130hp, or 140hp, up to 1990, 'n you can bolt all the externals from yer broken motor, onto the new Long Block,....

A Bobtail motor, is a complete ready to run motor, hook up the plumbin', 'n electrical, 'n it's ready to go,....
With a Bobtail motor, yer gonna run into fitment issues, tryin' to drop in anything newer than yer's,...
The gas lines might be different, the exhaust will be different, 'n marryin' the drive, Could be a serious issue, depends on the Bobtail motor ya buy,.....

Buyin' a junk donor boat, with a good runnin' driveline, gives ya All the pieces to update yer hull to whatever vintage donor boat ya buy,....

Any longblock pre 1990 2.5 or 3.0 will bolt in place of your current busted motor
