Johnson J90PLSSE shifter hook up

I replaced the impeller on my 2000 Johnson 90hp and I am having an issue getting the shifter hooked back up. I understand the shifter rod is supposed have the bend pointed toward the front of the boat. Am I supposed to:
A. have the binnacle in forward and the shifter rod in forward...
B. have the binnacle in reverse and the shifter rod in reverse...
C. some other combo...

Simply disconnect cable at the motor. Pull shift rod fully up.----Engage the pin in the shift rod hole.

This is what I ultimately did, however I had to remove the lower cowling first... I don't think I could have done it without removing the lower cowling. It needed cleaning anyway. Now it looks NEW! Thanks!!!
