I have 2006 25 HP 4strike Merc. I can't seem to fine tune a good trolling speed... the reverse, neutral and forward is on the tiller. As soon as I turn the throttle to forward it clicks into gear and it's stuck at that one speed. Now if I try to slowing reduce my speed, but not click into neutral I get a bad grinding sound (think it's the safety starting mechanism) Anyway around this?

:welcome: aboard momodig.

If you want to slow down the trolling speed and are playing with the grinding noise, try a drag sock or something to slow the boat down rather then subject the gears to questionable grinding. That would be the better way around that grinding in my opinion... JMHO!

Welcome aboard.

The grinding is because she is starting to shift to neutral. Don't do that, you are wearing out the gears in the lower unit. Shift in and out of gear smartly to avoid the unneeded wear.

Any idea what RPMs the motor is turning at idle in gear? Some Mercs have a Troll Control to idle at a lower speed for trolling. Have you seen anything labeled Troll Control? You may not have it.

Get a 5 gallon plastic bucket with a lot of 1 inch holes drilled in it... Drag that on about 10 ft rope. You can adjust the drag by how many holes are in the bottom of the bucket.

On the carb there should be an idle adjustment screw, it will stop the the linkage from moving any further. I haven't looked at that motor to be able tell you exactly where it is.
