Hello all, long time lurker first time poster. I just bough a 99 6hp Johnson from my brother in law. I saw the motor running about 6 months ago and all seemed fine. Water out of tell tale and running smooth. Into storage it went, hasn't been used since. Well I went to fire it up a few days ago and nothing from tell tale. I let it run in a barrel for about 10 seconds gave it a few revs and still nothing. Then I went ahead and changed the water pump parts out thinking the impeller was bad. The old one looked fine, but I went ahead and put a new one in anyway. Fired it up and still no water. Feels like exhaust coming out of both "pee" hole and rear exhaust but no water. Didn't let it rum more that 10-15 seconds so don't think it's overheating. I'm stumped, any ideas? Thanks in advance.

#1= are you sure?? the key is on the driveshaft?? they -WILL slip out sometimes when impeller is installed!! next -force compresses air="High Pressure" in "P" tube! re test-water?

Water pump itself must be well submerged in a bucket in order for the pump to work !

So you ran water up through the water intake line WHILE THE LEG WAS OFF and made sure the tell tale was flowing? I always do this while the L/U is off to check for obstructions. Obviously you checked the telltale for obstructions, like dirt dobbers etc? I like to take the water outlet tube off of the tell tale fitting and really check it to make sure it is clear.

You may have missed the water input tube/ waterpump connection. Also, 10-15 seconds may have not been enough time for the water to start flowing out of the telltale. Maybe let her run a bit longer. It will take the thermostat a while to let water into the block anyways. And you are sure there is no water coming out of the rear exhaust outlet?

I did run water through while the leg was off and some did come out. I didn't think the smaller motors had thermostats but I could be way off on that. Just strange to me it didn't pee after I stored it, I'm sure it was before I did. And the old impeller looked fine. I think I'll try to check the impeller key again tomorrow and take off the tell tale line. How long can I let it run without water going through before overheating would be an issue? Thanks for the help guys, keep the ideas coming, I'm out of them. :mad-new:

There was a thermostat installed when it left the factory.--That motor should " pee " a few seconds after start-up.---You put the pin on the flat with some grease to hold it.--Then install the impeller.---Verify that pin is driving the impeller.---Then lower the housing on while turning the driveshaft.

look at post four. water must be at least five inches about the cav plate when in a barrel, otherwise it wont work, you must simulate the same condition as on a boat, ie the stern sinks at idle rising water to the pump, once on plane the water flow lifts the water up to the pump

Ok I'll mess with it some more and report back tomorrow. The water was about halfway up the shaft, just under the exhaust so I don't think that was the issue. How long is it safe to run it without water coming out? 30 seconds, a minute?

20 seconds.
Turn the flywheel with the leg out of the water. You should hear the impeller creak, if it doesnt, then youve installed it wrong

Make sure the water pick up tube is connected to the impeller housing correctly as you are installing the lower end. You may have to stick a screwdriver in the small gap to line them up.

Success! Still not sure what the issue was; I took it all apart and re assembled. Thinking I might have had the impeller fins facing the wrong way. Still doesn't explain why it didn't work after storage. Either way she's peeing again. Thank you Jesus.

yes im jesus and allah. impeller fins are flexible, doesnt matter which way they go in, what matters is the key
