Im buying a 18 foot center console and I fish off the Jersey coast is this to small to stay within a mile off the beach? I always had bigger boats this is my first one of this size. Providing tha tthe weather is good I dont think I sould have a problem. Whats your thoughts?

Bill

I think you're safe.

Even smaller boats will be safe only the common sense part of it becomes more important.

Howdy, BN.

Center console boats vary greatly in their seaworthiness.

If you are talking about a Boston Whaler Outrage 18, Grady White, Scout, or other top-line salt water boat you are good for offshore.

Other center console boats may be marginal for even good weather in a sea.

Given good weather, flat seas and a competent helmsman most 18 CCs are safe for near shore use.

Good luck. :)

I personally am familiar with the north atlantic and an 18ft of any kind is too small to go out with any confidence and safety. There will be a few days when the winds are low and out of the west where one would be ok but I would never recommend an 18 footer for that area. This is not florida where you get many days that you can take an 18 footer out without a problem. i got out in it almost every time i go out. when i get out of the inlet, i judge how it is, and go off of that. especially if you hug the shore you are ok.

:) I think you are basically right Crazy Charlie but we do take chances and sometimes the Atlantic isn't forgiven.
I've been 15-20 miles off shore in my old 20' lund. You have to know when to pack it in.
