Hi

I am french and sorry for my english which is not perfect at all. I am very embarassed with my Lower Unit, I don't find any answers in french forums and hope that americans will be more informed ;) My engine Is a DFI Optimax 90HP of 2005 only 200hours

I explain you the issue.

I decided to change my O-ring on the bearing carrier. So I removed the Prop shaft. Bearing carrier assembly, change the O-ring (which was cut) and When I put the assembly in the Lower Unit, there was a small gap beetween le bearing carrier and the lower unit ( approximately the width of the o-ring to give you an idea). So I told myself that the bearing carrier will get full in while I would put the 2 nuts of the bearing carrier. But I didn't work this way, the bearing carrier didn't move and it cracked as you can see on the pictures.

So now I have 2 questions :

- Why the bearing carrier didn't enter fully ? why there wan this small gap ?
- No I Have to buy a new bearing carrier and the seals inner and outer ( maybe the 2 bearing which are inside the carrier too ? )? Can I change the it myself or do I have to go to a specialist ? Do I have to use a press to put the new bearings and seals inside the carrier ?

Thank You very much for your help.

Ps : I just changed my 4 mounts, lot of work but If nou need advice maybe I can help you

Pull it back apart and I'll bet you will find the rear thrust bearing and washer shifted not allowing it to tighten. Check the bearing as it will flat spot it and not allow it to spin freely....

The new Bearing Carrier will come pre-assembled with everything so you should just be able to slide it in once you I figured out why it didn't go all the way down.

Did you lube the sides of the carrier up before installation? Are you using the mercury service manual as a guide?

Do you have your engine serial number handy?

Thank you very much for your answers

My serial number engine is 1B173658

Faztbullet Can you explain me with the boats.net diagram which parts are not properly engaged and not allowing the carrier to tighten ? I don't understand if you mean that when I pull out the carrrier out the first time the bearing n?21 moved and so is not placed properly or is it the parts 22, 23 or 15 which are not placed properly ?

Fun times Do you thing that if Y buy the parts n?16 on boats.net diagram, bearing and seals will be included ? I will be so great ...
I Lubed the inside of the lower unit and the Oring just to easily slide. Is it not enough ?
Yes I used the mercury manual service, but they just say to use a plastic tube of 152mm on the propreller shaft to get the thrust gear and wahser tighten. So Faztbullet shoud be right.
I will try to move those parts 15,22,23 to check if while spinning they can get closer

Thank you very much for your help !!!!!!

Faztbullet I am not sure to understand this sentence : "Check the bearing as it will flat spot it and not allow it to spin freely.... ".
Can you explain me again illustrated with the number of the parts on the diagram. Thank you

No Title

Its items 22 and 23 in the diagram below., there is a small ridge that hold thrust washer and bearing in place and they will fall out of place. When tightened out of place the ridge will deform the edge of bearing..
