I am working on a Mercury 200, 85 model, it runs ok, but no water going through it, so pulled the leg off to check the pump. To do this I tilted the motor all the way up by hand. Problem is the motor got stuck in the up position and I cannot work out why. I can't see how it can be hydraulic pressure holding it up, at the moment there is no hydraulic pump and the lines are all open, yet I can't see any mechanical reason for it being stuck up either. Any ideas ?

thx
Steve

First things first, welcome to iboats we love having new members join us at any time... :welcome:

Now to your problem, If that motor a hydraulic tilt and trim model? You talked about hydraulics but said you can not see any hydraulic pressure. So if it is a hydraulic capable engine then there is a manual hydraulic release valve to allow it to lower down... If it is not a tilt and trim setup, you should have a little lever that is locking it in that position. It isn't real big so you have to really search for it. But to release it, you have to lift the engine a little bit higher and then flip the release and lower it back down...slowly. Don't just let go because it will flop down and could catch you hand or arm... JMHO! I'm sure others more familiar with your particular engine will chime in with more accurate info...

If you just removed the pump and lines and pulled the motor up either you dropped the lock lever and that is holding it up or you still have fluid in the ram and the check valves are prevent it from dropping.

This, only thing that will hold single ram up when hoses detached, but '85 should be production 3 ram tnt......

Thanks guys. Yes it is hydraulic but the pump isn't connected yet. I was looking for some kind of lock lever, but on this motor it that spot there is what looks like a manual pull / push choke, yet I can't get much movement out of that either. I will take another look today, if I can't get any joy I might take a photo of it.

Cheers

ahhh, yes I thought that might be it, trouble is it ain't budging. I'm going to keep soaking it in WD40 and hopefully it will eventually pull out.

Got it ! Actually my neighbour, Pete did. It was just the weight on the pivot point, plus the fact that its down for a couple of years .. just took some brute force to get it to budge.
