yeah there have been a lot of very interesting and informative replies! ...even the wife ones haha. thanks very much!

So to piece it all together, sounds like i need to hold off on buying, especially a $200k one. and i should basically forget the fractional ownership/time share idea, as it just won't work (hence why it's difficult to find) with something so personalized as a boat and so depedant on the calendar and the weather. Instead, I should join a boat club, make some friends, learn about the world of boating, try out some smaller boats by renting, and go from there.

Sounds like a plan. I guess I have to wait a bit before I can instagram a picture of myself on my own boat and proclaim that i have made it ahaha just kiddin...i won't even do that.

anyway, thanks again for all the helpful and informative replies! happy boating :D

There is an old saying "Never lend out the wife or the boat". The rest is NSFW, but you may look it up.

I don't see an issue with boat time ownership, it's just a fancy rental agreement. They currently rent out house boats which cost a half mil, heavy equipment and exotic sports cars. It's all about how much coin your willing to spend. The marina rents out a house boat and when it comes back they clean it up and inspect for damage. Everyone pays a damage fee going in, so everything is up front. So what if it's a half mil cruiser your renting, same thing, just more money. just need to be in the right location to make it work, and know what to inspect when it returns.

Edit: Also do not rent your own personal boat, unless a hand pick crew goes with it

The difference with a rental situation is that there is someone in charge that has the ultimate decision making authority.
You sign a legal contract before every rental and place a deposit and someone other than yourself inspects the property when it is returned.
Penalties are assessed for any discrepancies immediately.

In a casual time share situation, whoever gets to the boat first gets it. No one is in charge.
If everyone is responsible for everything, then no one will be responsible for anything.

Unless there is only one set of keys that one of the owners hands out to the captain of the day and inspects the boat before departure and after returning the keys, arguments and finger-pointing will ensue.

It's a great concept but almost impossible to execute to everyone's satisfaction. There are way too many variables with a boat. Beyond that, I really would not want to share a boat with a new boater. Even being pretty careful I managed to have some misadventures in my first season.
