New to the site and first post ever to a forum.

I have an 84' Evinrude 8hp short shaft (model# E8RCRM) that I have removed the lower unit from. I've searched the Web for 4 days now and have found nothing on what I'm needing. I'm putting an impeller kit in which I have under control, but I also bought a gearcase seal kit due to a slight leak around the prop shaft. My question is, does anyone have a PDF of a repair manual on this or could help walk me through it. I am an ASE Certified tech, so mechanical skills are at an ok level. Impellers I've done, I've just never ventured into tearing a lower unit apart to reseal. I've heard there are a few specialty tools needed for this design unit and that's another reason why I haven't blown it apart yet. Thanks in advance for any information!

Basically the same engine as me ( except mine is the 6hp Yachtwin version)

No problems. All simple and straight forward . Done the seals in mine a couple of times without reference to any manuals.

Easy job , no special tools needed at all on that one !!!!----No manual required either.-----Just be careful with propshaft bearing / seal housing as it is now listed as NLA

When you pull the two bolts out of the carrier, it won't pull out. It comes out about a 1/8", which is from the tension of the spring inside the prop shaft. Besides the two bearings (which can be held to the shaft with grease) the shift rod is a booger to get adjusted to slide the prop shaft assembly back into the housing.

Doing a complete job on one of these lower units now and do not foresee the issues mentioned in post # 8

It's the O ring on the gearcase head that is making it difficult to remove. You just have to gently ease it out...The spring is not holding it in. Its just a return spring for the clutch mechanism.

The man in the video says he his working on a 1994 model. Its different to a 1984 model which has a dog clutch not those balls

He made things difficult for himself, I am sure, by not removing the prop .... You have to take it off to replace the prop shaft seals any way. Silly man not replacing those seals .I did not notice him renew the drive shaft seals either!

The '84 model very easy to work on having a dog clutch instead of those balls but you don't need to disturb any of that if you take out the gearcase head and leave the prop shaft and all the rest of the insides in place.

How are the seals in the carrier supposed to face? Should they seat all the way against the brass "bearing"?

They fit in back to back so that the inner one keeps the oil in and the outer one keeps the water out. ( ie springs facing inwards and outwards respectively)

The same applies to the drive shaft seals.

there are diagrams in the BRP parts lists that show how the seals fit
AFAIR the inner one goes in fully and the outer one almost flush with the carrier.
