Hello,

I have a 1983 Evinrude 35HP engine. This is my first boat and I am trying to get it running. Could it be the battery not having enough juice?

I turn the key and it cranks and cranks but doesnt turn over. I read that I should not use any type of starter fluid to test if it turns over. I would take a video but it just started storming. I will try to get one in the morning.

Thanks in advance.

Check fire and fuel . If spark is ok pour a little premixed fuel thru spark plug ports if it runs some then you have a fuel delivery problem .Post results .

I will try that also. I just picked up a new battery. I definitely needed one as the old one was not holding a good charge.

Here is what is happening.

So, I went and purchased 2 new spark plugs, I sprayed a little fuel in to the carb and it fired up after a few attempts and cut off and then I got it to stay running until I shut it off. I shut it down and tried to start it back up and now it just cranks and cranks but won't start.

I have about 5% outboard knowledge but I am good with car engines, etc so I am learning as I read through these posts on here. I feel like I accomplished a little something today by at least getting it started.

I called a few boat places and they want around 100.00 to tell me what is wrong and then hourly to fix it...

few pointers

1/ prime the fuel bulb until its firm (a bit like a firm hand shake)
2/ lift fast idle lever on the remote
3/ press key in when cranking
4/ I do not hear water running in the video. Make sure you are using muffs and have the water turned on before starting
5/ take another video but this time off the remote and how you are trying to start it.

The water is running down below with the muffs. I will take another video tomorrow. Thanks.

I would start by pulling the fuel line from the carb and then turn it over. It should pump fuel. If it doesn't pump pull the hose from the front of the fuel pump and then squeeze the bulb. Should get fuel.
If you are getting fuel up to the carb bowl then a carb rebuild kit is in order. They are not expensive and most napa stores carry them. That carb is very easy to rebuild and a very simple design. Get a can of good carb cleaner, and a couple cans of air like is used to clean a keyboard or computor.
To remove the carb 1st the starter has to come off. If I recall it's only 3 bolts. The rebuild kits that I have bought all have had a good set of instructions with a parts diagram.
Hope this helps and good luck.

Ok. So I came home and I said to myself, let me see what happens. I turn the key and presto it fires right up. I let it run for a minute or so and I turn it off. Of course, it won't turn back on again, it just cranks.

Sorry the video is sideways.

Thanks. I have been looking at trying to remove the starter. Is there a diagram of this anywhere?

Also, NAPA has many carb kits. Do I need a specific one?

There is nothing wrong with your starter...The motor sounds correct and is turning over good. You have a fuel problem it sounds like. Follow the start procedure outlined by Glenn above. You are probably going to need to clean the carbs.

Correct. I know it's not the starter, I wanted to remove it so I could access the carb to remove it. Luckily, I found a guy that came by and took the carb off and is going to rebuild it for me for 30.00. HE said he may not need to rebuild it depending on the jets. He works on boats for a living and motorcycles so hopefully this fixes the problem...he thinks it will. We;ll find out tomorrow!

Thanks for everyone's assistance, thus far. First boat...I'm learning.

3 things i seen in your video. 1: Sounds heathy. 2: looks to be pumping water normally. 3: also apears that the primer is working otherwise it wouldn't have took off when you pushed in the key.
As the problem you are having occurs when warm 2 other things also come to mind. It could still be a fuel problem but a fuel problem usually doesn't just show up when warm. Could be an igintion problem or a vacuumm problem, both of which would show up after being warm.

Thank you for your input. The new rebuilt carb is going back on around 3:30 so we'll see what happens after that. The gas oil/mix is only a week old. The person advised me to change it, which I did since it's been sitting.

I'm sure this is basic, but I don't know, so I am asking....when I push the key in, it revs the engine...what is that for? Will I need to do that for anything?

Also, the choke doesnt stay up on it's own...should it? I lift it up, and it falls right back down. That controls my speed, correct?

Well, the carb was taken apart and the metal rod in the middle is bent/cracked so I need a new carb. I just ordered one online and it should arrive Monday, hopefully.
