OMC Remote Control Grinding Noise

Before starting the 1988 150 HP V6 Evinrude outboard engine on my boat I pull the remote control lever out so it is in the neutral position. Then as the engine warms up I control the rpms of the engine by moving the remote control lever forward or backward as required. Recently when moving the lever I have noticed a noise like metal grinding against metal. Since I don't know anything about a remote remote control unit I am wondering what I need to do to get rid of the grinding noise. Is there some way to apply lubricant or do I need to replace the whole unit? Advice from anyone that has dealt with this problem will be appreciated.

The unit will have to come apart to be checked for any worn parts or maybe just lubed.

Okay before taking it apart I will want to remove it from the boat which means I will need to disconnect the throttle and gear shift cables. How is this done?

Friend, Me thinks you need a good factory service manual.

I have a good service manual and it does not address disconnecting the gear shift and throttle cables from the remote control unit. That is why I am asking the question!
