My new boat.

Hey guys, i'm new here at the forum, i buy this boat 3 days ago, it's a 1974 GRADY WHITE CABIN CRUISER 21 FEET ,i payed U$ 500 bucks, this boat is not running since 2009, today I buy new battery to see what's going on, and i found inside the boat, spark plugs, distributor cap.

I buy the universal spark wires to change everything, the seller said the boat have a 165 OMC motor, but i saw in the motor saying OSCO, i don't know about the size, don't have nothing saying about that, in the title or in the motor, where i found this?

I put the battery on, and the starter is not working, but i don't know what starter i buy. the motor is very rusted.

what i do first before i try start the motor?

where i put the water in this kind of motor to try run?

I try put the propeller up or down and doesn't works to, but the lights, gauges and wipers is working.

Tomorrow I will try do the cleaner up and I put new photos here.

Welcome aboard Gundemberg!

Well - you've gotten a troublesome old drive system. I know, because I've got a '72 model of the same one. My first suggestion is decide if you want to keep this boat and try to get it running. OMC went out of business years ago, and this drive is completely obsolete. Some parts are still available, and some have to be found by hunting. Many marine technicians won't even work on them anymore. There's a chance that it'll be pricey to get going (though mine wasn't).

Start by ordering a shop manual for the drive system. You're going to need that. After that I would remove the outdrive from the boat (to eliminate some variables) and try to get the engine running. The drive shifts using electricity and shifts by wire. It's easy to take off, but mind the drive wires. Disconnect them inside the boat before you take the drive off. They are located on the port side toward the back of the engine. You can see mine here:



Check the upper gear case of your drive to see if it is seized up. If it's seized, the engine won't run when connected to the drive (it's always turning the upper gear case).

The engine is a '74 GM 250 inline 6 that has been "marine-ized" as a boat engine. They are pretty easy to come by if you need another block. The OSCO you are seeing is a replacement exhaust system. You can still find OSCO on the internet. The starter, alternator and many of the things hanging on the engine are marine grade for spark shielding. If you can clean up the starter, have it rebuilt, otherwise you'll have to hunt for one.

You'll need an engine type which is on a tag on the engine itself. Mine is a JUFM-10S, and the tag is located starboard side toward the back. You can see mine in this photo:



shop.evinrude.com will have parts breakouts for the sterndrives to find part numbers and if the part is available OEM.

To run your boat on land, you'll need to use a hose adapter. It was an option, so your boat may not have it. It should be on the side of the drive trunion as in this photo:



Look carefully at the boat. Very potentially it could be a money pit. These old drives aren't all bad, but they can be a pain to take care of.

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,..... Those ole Grady's have abit of a following,... If our resident early Stringer Expert, southkogs can't keep yer Stringer runnin',...
That hull might be a Great candidate for a full driveline refit to a more current driveline like a 350 Merc or Volvo,....

hey guys, sorry about delay to answer, i'm very busy with my work, i can't go try to fix the boat, but i will all the weekend, thank you guys for the answers, i will check all the motor, and post new pictures here, i'm thinking about change the motor or put this one to work, but i don't wanna spend a lot of money there, i will try do it myself with your helps.
