What is this I found in the lower unit

Mercruiser 4.3 Alpha 1 gen 2

I was changing out the impeller and when I took the lower unit off, I found these two things in the exhaust. One is black rubber and the other is plastic. I assume they came from the engine somehow. Any ideas what they are?

No pic Rob, but I'll guess the pieces used to be your exhaust shutter(s).

Without the pictures, they would be my guess too...What is the engine serial number? There were 2 different style shutters used, later and earlier. The earlier ones were prone to falling off...

Here is the picture again. I assume the oval black rubber piece is the flapper valve but I do not know what the rectangular plastic piece is.


Every time I attach the picture, ( no matter what size ) it comes back with a database error and only posts the text.

not sure what the plastic thing is, however the burnt rubber part is what is left of one of your flappers. time to get new ones.

Yes the oval piece is an shutter. Looks like you had a pretty good overheat and should probably look for more damage from it.

The other piece looks like a water dam from the lower unit --“ maybe it fell out when you disassembled it?

If you post your drive serial number somebody may be able to help.

That square plastic thing is a 'filler wall' in the bottom of the top housing. Part # 9 in this drawing.
