merc stuck in revers ??

ok i was berthing up today and the engine got stuck in reverse how do i get it out of gear ??

What type of motor is it and Ser# would be a good place to start. If it has forward controls, try shifting it out manually at the shift block under the cowling. You may have to take the cable loose if the shifter handle is stuck also.

IT is a 1999 Mercury 60 hp 2 stroke .
i went hard astern and and then ahead then astern again and the engine stalled and stuck in revere .
what can i do to get it out of gear

Like I was saying, is the shifter handle stuck also? If not take the cable loose and see if you can manually shift it at the shift block under the cowling. You need to work your way back until you eleiminate your problem.

will strip it l8r today and find out the problem

More than likely a problem in the shift controller.

ok it is not the shift control nor is it the cable i had a good look today so it will b tommrow b4 i get to take the bottom off .as the boat is in the water ,
i took the cable off it is moving free so i am thinking the problem is in the gearbox hop it is not anything serious

Can you shift it manually from the top of the motor?

Next step is dropping the LU to see if you can shift it there. If not it looks like your going in. There is not much to working on them I'd just make sure you have a good manual, preferably factory Merc.

ok i had to drop the LU their was a broken pin it locks in to the spline on the shift kee .
now i cant seem to fine the part any wear on the net i will post a photo of it and a photo of the serial number of the engine maybe sum one might b able to help me

I believe this is the parts listing for your outboard, but I can't see that particular part. Where did you say it was located?? It kinda looks like the shift cam and follower, but I knever saw one that was one piece. Its the right # though.http://www.boats.net/parts/search/M...sing, Driveshaft 1.64:1 Gear Ratio/parts.html

yes you are right the guy that welded it thought it was one peace but after it broke we cheked the manual lol 2 l8 then so he made a new cam follower and built up the cam and we will see if it works tommrow as i am a fisherman i am away to sea on munday so will not b back for 8 weeks

You could have replaced both parts for under $100. I hope he did it for free.

yes it was a free bee did not cost any thing but will order the new parts for peace of mind
