iv learned what boat stands for bout to add another thousand.... i bought another boat thinking i could make a little money off of it. i got 1500 in it getting it leagal and in my name... its a 1987 searay pachanga 19 has 205 hp 4.3. ran great the 1t time i took it out took in out again ran it in some shallow water ( dont know if it matters) kicked up some mud so i idled out to the channel gave it some throttal and it shut down all a sudden. it was hard to start back once it started it ran good for about another 50 feet then did it again and then would not start had to get towed in and all that good stuff. got it home pulled all the belts off tried starting it and it will turn over and then stop like something is tight in the bottem end... WHAT DID I DO????

has great oil pressure and wasnt running hot. another question is should i put a new motor in it or sale it and try to make my money back interior needs a little work done to it but the haul is in great shape

Ayuh,... Is there any oil in the drive,... Drop it,+ see what it looks like...
Then pull the drive to see if it's the Motor, or the Drive....

Btw,...
People won't pay $1500. for a DEAD 1987 boat....

When you say it turns over some then stops, it sounds to me like it's hydro-locked.
Pull the plugs and see if one has water in it.

The Chevy truck eng will bolt up, but won't last too long.

Re: bout to add another thousand

why wouldnt it last long? i seen were i had to put brass freeze plugs in it... it turns over real slow like its really tight iv had it out of the water for almost a day i tried using the starter to turn it over it would make about a half of revolution then stop. so i broke the breaker bar out and it would turn a little then stop it felt like i was gonna break the crank bolt off. i kinda thought it may be hydro locked myself but it ran to good and then just died to have any water in it unless its full of fuel. i had that happen to my 406 1 time after a new starter and flywheel later. if i knew i was going to get this boat i would of never of sold it. 406 sportsmen 2 heads solid lift cam about 10.5;1 compression had a lot of low end torque would of been perfect for this boat. :(

For a Pachanga? If it is in any decent shape I would still give him the 1500 if the rods were hanging out of the block!

Did you pull all the plugs and see if it will crank over?

Re: bout to add another thousand

i was so mad by the time i got pulled into the docks and loaded it up and drove an hour and a half home i didnt mess with it tomorrow i plan on tearing into it . if its just the motor i can fix it for nothing i can pull it and put another one in myself i can get a 4.3 at a local junk yard for nearly nothing... no rods are hanging out of the block or anything like that like i said it had great oil pressure and low temp when it went dead. i was hoping somebody would tell me it as worth something... the little cuddy cabin part of the boat is in excellent shape i did a little buff job on section of the boat and it really cleaned up. the trailer is expensive i think has a tandem axle trailer made out of thick rectangle tubing and has diamond plate on it and 4 center line wheels on it. if somebody would spend some money on the interior it would be worth quite a bit of money i think... i seen a few boats on ebay with messed up motors and no trailer going for 900 on ebay...

You are correct it is worth some money. The Pachanga has a real big following and they bring decent money. I looked at a few project Pachangas before I bought the Baja and even the ones that needed a lot of work were bringing decent money.

Good luck and let us know whata you find!

I was hoping nobody would tell him that and maybe I could sly in another one cheap! :D
Just kidding of course.
Besides, Imagine what Mama would say.
Marine engines are just enough different and have different loads on them, and in addition to brass core plugs, they have marine stainless steel head gaskets.
Also, say some water got into the cylinder through the manifold, it will happen to the new one as well.
Enjoy the Latin Dance.
Mine is (was) a blast!

Re: bout to add another thousand

the driver side manafold does have a crack in it i seen were somebody tried to weld on it once before.... im no good at welding cast so im not even gonna attempt it...

if water did get in and hydro lock the motor how would i know it came threw the manifolds? when the boat died the first time i had to hold it wide open it cranked over a few very slow times then finally started for me... half tempted to go out and start pulling plugs out in my boxers

Nah, Don't show off your Fruit of the Looms!

That makes it sound a little different. I would still start with pulling the plugs though. If that checks out, pull the drive.

The forward reverse selection is in the bottom, so that part could be free but the top end (of the drive) could be seizing. Another possibility is a bad gimble bearing.

You could actually start with the plugs or the drive, that's up to you.

Good Luck, See Ya Tomorrow.

Pull the plugs!!!

You dont even know whats wrong with the engine you have and you are shopping for another. Not a good way to make money.

Pull out your plugs and gently try and turn your engine over. Check your oil, run a compression check.

Water can get into your engine through your cracked manifolds and cause a hydro lock. You keep trying to turn that engine over you are going to:

A) fry your starter
B) snap the harmonic balancer bolt off in your crankshaft
C) Mess up the internals in your engine.

Take the time to properly diagnose what is wrong with your engine and how the damage occurred and correct it. Dont force anything and dont just blindly throw money at it.

PS.

You dont weld manifolds. You replace them...

Re: bout to add another thousand

pulled all the plugs out this morning and she turned over great put the plugs back in and tried to start it it turned over good then it hit another hard spot i dont think it is the motor... it made a kind of popping noise almost sounded like it was behind the motor itself...

Re: bout to add another thousand

Hmmmmm.
So after being allowed to cool completely, she turns over well?

I take it no water came out of the plug holes?

Pull the drive. (Bet you've already started)

Then when you turn it you'll know real quickly if it's the engine or behind the engine.

Just in case you haven't read up on it, shift the throttle handle into forward before you start.

Re: bout to add another thousand

put the shift lever in the full forward position.

Remove the bolts that attach the rams to to the outdrive.

Remove the six nuts attaching outdrive to gimbal housing.

give a tug on the outdrive...
