Re: Is throwing paper products overboard bad for the water?

every smoker out on the water throws thier butts overboard. they pollute more than anyone else. throwing butts out the window on the road. Are there any smokers who boat, who don't throw butts into the water?

When you see trash wash up on shore, it is never paper, just plastic and rubber and what not.

I absolutley smoke like a dam chimney! You will never see a butt come from my boat! I keep one of those little butt buckets in the cupholder all butts go there, if I see another smoker tooss their butt I say something to them. There is no reason for there to ever be any trash or litter ever go in theses beautiful waters we are so lucky to ply.

I always carry a special cigarette butt disposal unit courtesy of Dr. Pepper.

Yep I smoke, and my three boys, we have two ashtrays on the 16 footer, just can't flick them into the lake. That being said I was with a avid fisherman one day on his boat, now he's the type of guy that would yell at you for leaving a wake, I didnt smoke because I didn't see anywhere to put my butt so what do he do? Flicks it, my jaw hit the floor of the boat. Bought him a ashtray the next day from the dollar store. I'm going fishing next week with him I'll see if he still has it.

I just practice if you take it out with you bring it back. I have a dip net to pick up trash I come across out on the water. I just put it out at the end of the driveway with the rest twice a week and it disappears... love how that works!!!

so how many of you responsible smokers will throw your butts out the window of the truck on the road?
that is about the same thing as throwing them in the water.

You know what. The guys that throw butts out the window are jerks, but you lumping every smoker into that group makes you bigoted toward smokers.

BTW, I don't throw my butts out the window of my car. If I am outside and there is no ash can I will bend over and snuff it out and throw it in a garbage can or even put the extinguished butt in my pocket until I find a garbage. I don't smoke inside my own house because my wife doesn't smoke. I am respectful of those around me and where my smoke is going.

You know I saw a group last year in a bowrider on the river I go to that were beached and they were throwing their empty cans on the beach. I guess all people who own bowriders, or all people who drink beverages out of cans are litterers too.

techinally i guess you can't pee overboard either.

i have taken dumps in the water too.

i have actually picked up trash before from a local island that everyone goes to. because if campers start trashing the place, then dnr will make the island off limits.
but i also threw egg shells into the water there, so i could pick up more real trash.

To the jerks on this forum that like to stereotype people because they happen to smoke, all I can say is that whatever respect I had for you as intelligent adults has diminished extensively.

All butts go into a butt bucket, and that is in my car, my boat, and in my Freightliner which I happen to log over 120,000 miles a year with.

Not everyone that smokes throws their butts around, kinda like not everyone that drinks goes out and drives drunk. I guess some of you don't have the common sense to comprehend that.

To the OP of this thread, all I can say is this "shallow end of the gene pool"

It's as simple as this, pick up after yourself or just stay off the damn water!!!.

Bad for the lake and bad for you if you get caught-something most lake boaters would wish upon you and could report you on.

NO... IT'S NOT OKAY!!!! I can't believe you even need to ask. People that throw things overboard **** me off. You take it out, you bring it back. As for smoking... I don't throw butts out the window and I don't flick em overboard. You smoke on my boat and flick one, you don't light up til you're back on shore. If that's a problem, you get a pfd and a long swim. The only things that go over are people and bait.

To those that think it's okay, do us all a favor. Find someone that wants to boat but can't afford one and give them yours.

NOPE when you live and work in the country wilderness you don't do that. Grass and bush fires spread rapidly.

I see your point about the paper looking bad, and getting into intakes, but i don't think it chemically hurts the water.

There is a paper plant about 3 miles downriver from my home. They are dumping chemicals including bleaches, chlorine and acids into the river (EPA tests and find them, company says it's not them, even though samples are taken at the output pipe and the sign says STAY CLEAR - DANGEROUS CHEMICALS).

Anyway, you might want to look into what chemicals are used in papermaking. It's not harmless and the final product contains those chemicals.

And every law enforcement type I know tickets anyone they find LITTERING in our area lakes.

Is it OK to throw the paper ticket for littering overboard?
