Volva transom shield replacement

Hi,

I just bought a 96 Larson with a 4.3L V6 inboard/outboard. Second time on the lake the boat started filling up with water which almost sank the boat.

I've taken it to a dealer who says the transom shield needs replacing and it is 8 to 12 hour job.

I haven't got any pictures at present but can this kind of thing actually happen and is there any way to avoid a huge bill to get it sorted?

Re: Volva transom shield replacement

If it takes a new transom shield, then you either have major corrosion problems or collision damage. And yes it will take 12 hours, probably more to change the transom shield. The engine comes out along with the transom shield, and trim pump hoses. Unless they are using a complete transom shield kit (TSK) from Volvo, then expect a lot more than 12 hours for the job.
The labor will be WAY less than the new TSK.

Thanks for the reply. I will have to get a look at the parts to be sure but corrosion seems the most likely.

Apparently we are talking $2200 for the transom shield so including labor it will be a very costly job. I've clearly been sold (probably unknowingly) a dodgy boat.

Thats why you ALWAYS pay a professional to do a pre-purchase inspection!
