I recently bought a 1972 Larson 1800 Shark. It is completely gutted. The deck has what seems to be styrofoam on it, Should I remove the foam before making a new deck or leave foam in? I will appreciate any help.
P.S..........This is my first time redoing a boat.

Re: New Deck

If it is wet, get it out. If it is dry, leave it.

Re: New Deck

hi night stick......welcome to i boats.

the foam is there for two reasons.

it provides "anti crush" for the hull.

it also is there by law for emergency flotation purposes.

the problem is that the foam can become waterlogged and rot the boat.

if your deck was soft.....that means water is in there....and the moisture started working on the wood.

NOW is the time to fully inspect the foam.
search core sample.....dig to the bottom of the foam.....if there is any water in it.....get it out.

if you choose to re foam it or not is up to you.
