I have a mariner lower unit that I would like to take apart and inspect. What would be the best manual that I could get to describe the proceedure for this? I have many tools including presses, pullers, etc. but I don't want to break anything so I would like a book to help me through it. Thanks.

Most lower units are not that hard to service. What motor do you have? Maybe someone could type you up some directions or point you towards similar posts.

Re: Mariner Lower Unit Repair Manual

That would be super helpful. I have a 1987 90 hp 3 cyl oil injected mariner. I really could use help on taking it apart. I have removed the impeller, shift shaft and prop. I'm not sure how the get the rest of the shafts out. Like I said I don't want to break something. I have an exploded view of the unit so repair and putting it back together shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for any insight from someone who has done this before.

Any reason why you want to disasemble it? Was if full of water or impact damage?

Re: Mariner Lower Unit Repair Manual

The unit (not original) currently on the boat is shifting hard. It was changed by the original owner for unknown reasons. He gave me the original and said maybe I could use it for some parts. This original unit when I checked the oil had some water in it so there must be some bad seals and other problems. I would like to thoroughly check it out and repair as needed as I might need it to put back in the boat. There is no sign of exterior damage.

I can't get either one of the shafts out, should I use a puller or are there pins or something else holding them in?

If you remove the 2 nuts that hold carrier into housing the prop shaft should slide right out ,if not it is rusted into place and that would mean all bearing sand possibly the driveshaft and propshaft are bad do to pitting and water marks..

Fastbullet,
Thanks for the reply. There was some water in the oil when I drained it and it had been run in salt water so I imagine it's stuck on. It was a freebie for parts anyway so nothing lost. I'll concentrate on the one in the boat now.
