I just got my first powered boat and I have been working on the kicker. I was down checking on the water pump due to poor circulation. Now Im putting it all back together and I noticed the shift rod wont move. Before I took it apart it would drop for reverse or pop up for forward. Now its stuck solid and I cant figure out what I did. When I check the connection down near the water pump it is also solid. The prop appears to move in forward. These forums have been a big help for browsing and Im hoping for help again. I have no prior experience just a repair manual and the internet :(. I hope im calling shift rod the correct name, im adding a pic to clear things up if not.

Did you get the shift connector installed properly?
You didn't remove the phillips head screw in the lower unit did you?

The shift rod has a detent in the lower unit. It takes a bit of pressure on the rod to make it "snap" over the detents. Are you trying hard enough?

hi.
this shift rod as you did mention is conected close to waterpump.
when you changed impeler you had to disasemble this comection.
look at diagram:
http://www.crowleymarine.com/johnson-evinrude/parts/32469.cfm
this element is no 58.
this lower shift rod is holding in gercase by spring no 33.
i think this lover shif rod just sliped sideways from this spring
disasemle midsection with lower section and take strong grip and try to tourn this lower shift rod.if you grip this lowershift rod you should move it up and down.it sholuld have 3 position

Wow, you guys are fast thank you! I did not touch the phillips screw. The shift rod slipping off something in the lower unit sounds the most likely so I will check the connection there.

I pulled apart the lower end and everything seemed to be connected properly. I didnt want to tear it into pieces and get over my head once again. When I pulled the lower end it brought the shift rod down into the reverse position. I closed everything back up and it is now stuck in reverse. I guess it could be a problem with rotating the rod. Im out of time for now but will try loosening the lower end to see if the rod will rotate later. Ive been putting vise grips on it but it wont move. Thanks for the help and any more suggestions.

I got it. The rod had slipped off of part no.33. It just took me a little while to understand all this. This is my very first experience with an outboard and I sure did get a hands on lesson. This was not my first hickup along the way. Thank you all so much, you have saved a great running evinrude's life.
