Check ball kit question

Just received a 30-98475T check ball kit. Rod is wayyyyyy longer than my original. I've seen this kit for the older style cast 'T' housing, as well as the 'T' housing that screws in, which I have.
Has anyone replaced the check balls and used a different part number?? I've been searching for quite a while, and the 98475T kit is the only one I'm finding (other than carb check ball kits).
I may have to just get another nylon lock nut and re-use the old rod, but would rather replace the whole assy.
Thanks!!

Re: Check ball kit question

Here's a pic I took before replacing the balls/springs comparing the rod lengths. I re-used the old rod; the balls seem to be held in place tighter now.
I've seen references saying this type housing didn't come with the check balls, but when I look up replacement parts, it shows the 'T' housing with the check balls.

Anyone know a reason for the diff in rod length??
