how to put the gearcase back together on a 6hp evenrude

how do you put the gear case assembly back together on a 6hp evenrude? I took it apart because there was gear oil leaking and wanted to replace the gasket, now I can't get it back together. I can get it close but it just doesn't want to go all the way. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have the lower unit completely separated from the midsection? The gearcase head and forward gear have centering pins to keep them in place. Make sure the shiftrod is contacting its detent.

no i don't have the lower unit separated from the mid section. I see what you mean about the centre pins on the forward gear and case, it still doesn't want to go together though. Would it be easier to remove the lower unit?

Yes. Remove the lower unit and turn it upside down while you work on it.

I've found out if you want to work on gear case
,if you put the motor upside down in a five gal bucket ,it works great. It holds the motor in position,and you can get to the job at hand... marvxyz1

If you do this make sure the midsection is completely dry otherwise water will get into the powerhead. Its still much easier if the lower unit is separated.

took the lower unit off and got it back together, thanks for your help it was very easy to work on that way.
