What is the rubber like material that seals the switch boxes of most engines ? I want to try get into an old cdi and thinner does not melt it is there a way to get into it without melting the circuit board ?

There are many types of "potting compounds" and they are quite impervious to lots of chemicals. You might try acetone but anything plastic will likely be eaten up by it.

So i assume its impossible to repair a switch box... Dont know why they pour this rubber all over the compounds instead of simply closing them up with some screws and bolts...

Two issues with electronics in a harsh, marine environment. Moisture and vibration. Potting compound takes care of both in one simple process.
