mercruiser misery

I recently bought a cruiser with a 1994 5.7 L mercruiser with abravo outdrive. Ran well 2 days then the next time I took it out the belt began to squeel when I started it. I stopped the engine--it was turning even though the belt was not moving. Restarted it and no squeel. All seemed well but then overheat the sea water pump was toast. I replaced it and decided that I would change the outdrive oil and grease the driveshaft and check the bellows so I removed the drive. I replaced it and placed rabbit ears on it to test. When I tried to start it there was a loud noise at the back of the engine then it started and the engine ran. I stopped it and tried to restart it. Again loud bumping noise--grinding so I quit. I think that I may have broken something in the starter or gear on crank. Any suggestions from here ?

check for water in the cylinders, sometimes a overheat will blow a head gasket

Did you check your alignment when you had it apart. How was the gimbal bearing? Don't think pulling the drive would hurt the starter. Did you lube the driveshaft. What shape were the ujoints in?

was your outdrive trimmed all the way down when you started it on the hose? if it was trimmed up it may have been binding the u joints.

The engine will start and run smoothly. The shaft was lubricated the bering was good. If I start the engine with the drive off. it does the same thing and will run but noisy cranking like starter not engaging:mad:
