I'm new here!! This seems like the site I should be on for info. I am wanting to pick up a project boat (first boat and project boat) and I don't see how I can really go wrong with the purchase price of a Larson I found. It would keep me from going to the bar 1 night! Here is whats included in the listing:

"i have a 1976 larson boat the color is yellow and black. the boat is in the middle of restoration the out side looks really good, has a jet plain looking windsheild.. the boat comes with a runing 1957 55hp evinrud. To make the boat complete it will need floor finished and carpet.. shouldnt cost to much the motor needs a water pump which is only about $20 bucks at the marina.. the inside you could probably find everything real cheap on craigslist. The hull and transom is solid"

My questions are:
1. What model Larson boat is this? 16 feet?
2. I can get this boat for next to free but have to drive about and hour and a half. Doesn't come with a trailer so i would have to figure that out. (worth it?)
3. Could I rebuild a deck (floor) based out of wood but finished as a fiberglass floor?
4. It currently has an outboard motor but could I turn it into an I/0 driven boat. Would it be a weight issue being that the boat is so small and not built for an inboard motor?
5. Is this boat even worth me dumping money into??

I just want something to work on and make it fully custom, obviously a long time down the road followed by money and lots of time. I will be doing most of the work myself unless I feel the need to hire a professional at any point. I don't mind putting money into a project over time and not "too" concerned of the resale value as long as I'm not dumping a ton of $$$ into it. With my ideas it seems like I would end up doing that though lol. Anything you have to say or suggest I appreciate it! Here are some pics:

I think it could be a pretty cool looking boat refinished.

Free boats cost $2000.
Converting to I/O adds another $6K+++
Outboards are so much easier to maintain and replace, cheaper too.
Conversions tend to go the other way, inboard to outboard conversion due to high inboard cost.
Its best to find a boat that most suits what you want in the first place ,

frankensteining a boat can get expensive. Not to say it isn't fun, just pricey.

Also rule #1, if it doesn't have a clean title, forgetaboutit.

Very cool boat. Certainly worth fixing up. Definitely ditch that I/O idea. As was mentioned, people usually go the other way and that boat is too small for an I/O anyway.

I agree now that the I/O idea is a waste for this boat and probably wouldn't work out anyways. It is a cool looking boat though. I believe the title is clean, just has sat for quite some time. We'll see what happens. I may just take a look at it this weekend and bring it home, who knows?!

My problem is that I do not have a boat trailer available to me at the moment. I found some cheap ones in the area that would work though. My biggest question is how would I get it on the trailer?? Obviously its just chillen on the ground right now and I'm sure its not light! Any thoughts?

1000% agreed forget i/o and make sure title clean.

Bet that hull, especially stripped, doesn't weigh more than 700-800lbs, the motor another 200-225. A cherry picker / engine hoist with some good straps--even a good floor jack--three or four jackstands, some small bits of plywood for "feet" and a competent helper/spotter and I bet you could get that onto a trailer no problem.

If the steering, and controls all work, motor turns over, transom and shell is sound, and all it needs is a deck and seating and maybe some rewire, could be a good low-cost project. Forget painting it, buff out that groovy 70's mustard yellow and make it shine!

Oh and be aware that as it sits, that thing is worth at best a few hundred bux in parts minus hull disposal fee, so don't overpay for it ;)
