My 1965 outboard will be going in forward gear and all of a sudden it sounds like it hit something, and go back to normal with no change in rpm. I has started to do it more often. Any ideas for what it is?

Re: 1965 Johnson Seahorse slipping out of gear

You probably have a spun prop. The propeller has two sections: an inner and outer hub with a bushing between them.

The bushing is designed to give when you strike an underwater object, to protect the drive train. Over time they wear out and need to be rebuilt.

Prop shops do the rebuild or you may find it easier to just replace the propeller if the propeller is not in very good condition.
