hi. im Erik. i'm usually in the mercury part of the forum dealing with a pain in the ***** motor but i just bought this cool motor and had a question. it has a knob on the front and the guy who sold it to me said its the fuel air mix knob. it goes to the bottom of the carb. I turn it while running and nothing happens and the knob seems to turn continually non stop. any ideas? also wondering whats the fuel oil ratio. any ideas what it might need or any common things to do right off. he said he cleaned carb/new gaskets and changed impeller. i appreciate any help you can give me. THANX ALOT

Re: new used(of course) 1956 12 hp johnson a few questions.

it only has one knob?

weird mine has 2. (but mines a 10hp)

Anyway, its the low speed jet adjustment knob.

Put it in all the way, and back it out 1 1/2 turns. And your good.
Each time you turn it, it takes about 10 seconds to change anything (or so I have read) I have never noticed a difference no matter where it is. But thats just me.

Go read the top secret files. it'll answer most of your questions.

Let's start by figuring out what you've got as Johnson didn't have a 12hp in 1956 (or ever, for that matter). Model number?

i just googled the model # and it came up sea king/monty ward. does this mean no parts for it. is this the adoptive sea king forum?

Re: new used(of course) 1956 12 hp johnson a few questions.

Your motor is a 56 Gale/Sea King 12 hp...reverse the first two numbers of the serial number to get the year. Good motors. Fuel mix ratio was 16:1 when new, but you can use 20 or 24:1 with todays TCW-3 marine oil. You have two rich/lean adjustments on the carb. Top one is the idle circuit (slow speed), bottom is the high speed circuit. Loosen the lock nuts on both up next to the carb so the knob/needle turns freely. Turn each one clockwise gently until it seats/stops. Back the bottom knob/needle out counterclockwise 3/4 of a turn. Back the top one out 1 and 1/2 half turns. Tighten the lock nuts so the knobs turn with some effort, but aren't loose. That'll get you started. After you get the motor started, adjust the high speed clockwise with the throttle up until it runs smoothly, then tighten the locknut. Throttle down and adjust the top knob/needle the same way...looking for smooth idle.
