Hi guy I had a question with touch ups .I know this has probablly been beaten to death but after applying perfection or britesides can either be done if there is scratches /gouges. Or do you have to sand completely and redo.I'm at a crossroads on what paint to use for the top of my 87 bayliner fish and ski I'm looking for durability but also able to fix scratches etc. and cannot spray it on .Any advice would help

Has no one had any experience with this?.I'm leaning towards perfection but still unsure,Either way I'll be using white or off white.

I can't speak from experience but was told that Interlux Brightsides was far easier to touch up as opposed to using Imron therefore that's what I'm going to be painting my boat with. I wouldn't think there would be too much issues with touching up since you're not dealing with clear coat. I looked into using Perfection but I didn't like the selection of colors.

I used an interlux bottomkote (red) and touched up (use lots of acetone first or it WILL flake back off) and did fine. I did notice this though: it sure faded FAST... so in a week the touch up was un-noticeable.

Absolutely. I used Brightsides on my boat and yes, you can do touchups with ease. Very good stuff to work with..and a strong, tough paint too.

I used Perfection on mine and I don't see any reason why you couldn't touch it up. It is just a single stage paint with no clear. I would just mix up a small amount in a hobby airbrush and spray/wetsand/polish it to blend back in.

Only thing is that perfection is a bit pricey and is not available in smaller containers.

I would like to see a good Brightsides job in order to compare the finish to my Perfection job because if the finish is comparable I would probably just go the Brightsides route next time. Much less finicky and much cheaper. The finish of the Perfection is pretty amazing though - as nice as the paint on my car.

yea I would like to see the difference myself,I don't know I'm still undecided.perfection might be worth the extra money but never doing this before, britesides may be the ticket .It's just depends how durable it actually is.

I do not believe Perfection can be touched up. It is some kind of new technology where the surface has different properties than the rest of the film. Once you scuff or remove the surface you can not sand and buff it back to gloss. I decided to use brightside because of this even though Perfection is more durable.

Re: Can interlux touchups be done?

I just painted my entire 18' runabout with brightside and it looks really nice for being rolled on and dry brushed.
I mean I never painted a boat before so I am very happy with how the paint worked and when you paint a 33 year old boat ANY shiny/white paint looks good.
I also did 16 pieces of wood framed upholstery. First time doing any upholstery work and its turned out very good IMO and again after using/having a clapped 33 year old burnt orange interior ANYTHING is an improvment.
I should post some pictures of it on this webby.

thats what I'm thinking about perfection also. I tend to be accident prone when it comes to scuffs and what not .Mainly dock rash etc.So is it safe to assume if you get mark of some sort the whole section/side would have to be taken down and redone.

Hmm as were posting i am doing just that...This i will tell you. Perfection is without a doubt superior to bright sides in both durabilty and appearance...quite a bit actually..Yes you can pop a dock quite hard with perfection and it just takes a beating.

Now as to refinishing..yes you can touch it up in a conventinal manner...It is as simple as isolating the scratch taping it off sanding down the edges and then rebuffing her back to a sheen....However you will notice the spot it will not buff to the orignal sheen...Not gonna happen.

Ive taken the whole boat down again that is i lightly scuffed the surface with 320 grit on all the good paint..the sheen is gone and where there were nicks well it was down to the gel coat...It was as simple as slapping on some new paint letting it dry lightly scuffing the new and then repaint here again.

Be advised as in any paint job it is prep that takes the time...Countless hours..:( of sanding...As to the acutal painting time...15minutes and poof your done...

Re: Can interlux touchups be done?

thats what I was wondering if that could be done. That black looks pretty nice.So if you put more coats of perfection on (4-5) instead of 3 might that make it harder to scratch down to the gelcoat?

It generally takes 4-5 coats to get a uniform color down...You build to a final finish...As one person stated its a two part paint that turns into one completely different product..When shes all done it is very thin maybe a hairs thickness but hard as nails..;)
