Need help motor runs slow. When motor is running idle its sounds good, but once I put it in gear it sounds weak and runs slow. Trolling motor seems to push the boat as fast as the motor. When I got back to day I ran the motor on the stand and put into gear and when I had the throttle wide open, it didn't seem like the prop was spinning that fast.
What I have done so far is
compression check, which are good. New plugs, Carb has been cleaned and idle speed mixture is good.
Thanks for the help

Checked that it is actually firing on both cylinders?

I thought thats what the compression check did. Whats the best way to check and see if both plugs are firing?
Thanks,
James

With a spark tester, available at any auto store. The quick a dirty way is to pull the plugs out and test each plug connected to the wire and grounded to the block, but that won't show you spark quality. Compression is a whole other beast but you need compression to have a motor run, no spark is much more common.

Pick up a spark tester from your local auto parts store. Only cost $6-7.

Edit: I see BK answered your question.

Re: no power on my 66 evinrude 6 hp

got the tester. don't think I got a good ground because I could not get a spark out of either plug wire. If I pull start with no plug in the wire there is a blue spark inside the boot. Only does it on one of the boots. I'm going to try and get a better ground and try the tester again, just wanted to post now and see if I get any replies on what to do next.
Thanks again for the help.

Don't know if you got one with adjustable gap but the gap can't be too far apart or no spark. You need a good ground, suspect that might also be the problem. You found the issue anyways, now it's time to pull the flywheel and inspect, could be dirty or wrong point adjustment, bad condensor, frayed wire or bad coil, good part is you have one cylinder working and can use the parts from it to swap and test.

Re: no power on my 66 evinrude 6 hp

Which one is the bad one? the one I can see the blue spark? looking at that wire I have found were the rubber is split right before the boot. Should I weight till tomorrow and get the manual before taking apart, or is it pretty simple removing flywheel and switching the parts around?
Thanks,
James

Flywheel removal will need a puller. Wait for the manual, then post here for more questions. The one showing spark is good, no spark is the dead one.

I just took it over to Bob's and had him fix it. I did not want to break something and make it worse. This is my first outbooard.
Thanks for all the help.
