!! My Motor won't start (Need Help) !!

Ok here I go. I have a 1986 Mercury 4 HP Outboard (Serial # 0A708744) that was woking fine on the lake and was pull started like 6 times no problem then the 7th time it didn't want to start at all. Got home and filled up the bucket to try it a bunch more times and still nothing. I can get it to make a couple hiccups but won't fire more than that. The hiccups sound a little rough to. I did check and it is getting spark. I put in a new plug just to see if that would help but it didn't make any difference. Gas seems to be going in but not sure if it is going as far as it needs to. Where should I go from here?

When something goes out that fast(btwn 6th and 7th pull) unless its electrical it should be pretty easy to spot. Is the fuel bulb staying hard after pumping it up? is your gas tank vent open? are you sure your getting fuel to the carbs. Try spraying fuel into the carbs and see if it fires. If it fires and won't stay running, I'm thinking you should check your fuel-pump diaphram.

Bulb is staying hard after pumping it up. Gas tank vent is not open. I sprayed fuel into carb and would not fire up at all.

Yes, definately open your tank vent. You say your getting spark,right? The only other issue would be a fuel issue. One other question, was the outboard pumping water when you were running it?

Well Earlier today I got it to make 5 hiccups in a row and thought it was going to start but it didn't and have tried all of what has been told so far but it still doesn't want to start. The gas is new gas so there shouldn't be any water in it. I do appreciate everyones help so far !!

I do remember it pumping water at one time when using it before it stopped working that same day but couldn't tell you if it was all the time. I suppose it is one of those things you forget to watch for.

Does anyone think I should pull the carb out and clean it? Or could it be the pump is not working? Is there any way to check if the pump is working with out being able to start the motor? I'd hate to have to bring it in to a mechanic and get raped by all the charges they will probably charge.

Ended up taking it in and the points are bad.
