Hey guys, I just registered to this site to seek some help. I have a 140 HP Evinrude Out-Board. Recently, the boat will rev up in idle just fine, but when it's in gear and under a load, it won't go beyond 2,000 RPMs. It also will stall at times. I went to an Evinrude marine repair shop and they seemed to think it was fuel related. Basically, when under load it doesn't go beyond 2,000 RPMs and it seems to want to try and go beyond but something seems to be stopping it. It will pulse with it's power, we top out at about 5-10 MPH or so due to this issue. Every once in a while it will sputter and try to exceed that, but it can't. The stalling issue makes me think it's fuel related as well. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I'm actually unsure of the year and model. The boat itself is a 98 Larson but the motor is definitely older. If I had to guess, I'd say late eighties or early nineties.

Post the model number. It should be on a plate on the port side of the transom bracket.
Go from there.

while operating at max rpm's have someone feel the primer bulb. if its sucked in or really soft you have a problem towards the tank. your fuel lines may be older and rotted/expanded due to eathanol in the fuel. also check your fuel filter and change your fuel/water seperator if you have one and if it's old

Too may 140 types to guess. See if there is a nickel-sized convex aluminum disc between the cylinder banks with some numbers on it.

I found the number 329611 on the motor. Is that it?

The guy I purchased the boat off of recommended changing the fuel/water seperator out. He had just changed the filter out himself. This was four months ago. The bulb stays hard.

I'm not near the boat right now, but I do have this picture. I know it probably won't help, but maybe someone can identify it by the picture?

I'm not familiar with out board motors, so it's hard to describe. There's a solid black plate in the front of the motor( Closest to the boat ), there were numbers engraved into it.

Crossflow, probably 1981 to 1984. The welch plug with the numbers would be on top of one of the cylinder banks.

So, I think I may have been using the wrong fuel mixture. It wasn't off terribly, but that may be the case. I'll keep everyone posted. I was corrected today and am going to try 50-1 ratio tomorrow.

Re: 140 HP Evinrude power issue

I took the boat out today and it would run correctly for about 5 seconds or so and then bog down for another 5 minutes and then give me another 5 seconds of power. It would fluctuate at times, sometimes having power for literally 1 seconds and then bog down again. The boat stalls from time to time as well. Any other ideas?

Is your fuel fresh?

What were your compression readings?

Did you have at least a 3/8" spark from each wire when you did your spark test?

What do your spark plugs look like?

What spark plugs are you using?

Do you have a water separating fuel filter?

Have you serviced your carburetors?

I haven't done a compression test yet. I'll check the plugs in the morning. Plugs are fairly new, not sure of brand, will check that as well in the morning. I do not have a water/fuel filter and I haven't serviced my carburetors since I've owned the boat, which was purchased in March.

However, my fuel is fresh :p
