Just pick up a bayliner 2850 w the 5.7l Volvo 260. It stopped shifting and it's already in the water. Is it ok to take the shift linkage cover off the drive, while it's in the water? Want to see what's going on...

Thx. I thought the cover was to protect the linkage, but wasn't water tight.

correct. tilt it up, remove the lower bolt. The top bolt has a hook on it that grabs the outdrive. Just loosen it up and pull the cover.

Thx - if it ends up just being the cable (i.e. needing a replacement), can the shift cable reasonably be replaced while the boat is in the water?

I've never tried it on the water, but it seems possible.
