Bought a 2005 maxum 1800mx 2 months ago and after looking over the boat found that the seats were leaking water. So I removed them to dry them out.
I opened up the hatch in the center of the boat and found that it was sweating so I had some suspitions about whether or not the boat was sunk,so I found two small 1 1/4 plugs one by the drivers feet and one at the passangers feet . Removed them and saw that the foam is soaked right up at the top. Do I need to remove the fiberglass liner or is there anouther way.
any help would be appriciated thanks

Well sadly the foam is the worse part to get wet. From what I've learned by reading on here, and if I'm wrong someone please correct me; is that the foam will probably have to be removed if it is that soaked. That would include removing the floor,a nd taking the foam out of there. There is a chance that the water had somehow or another made it's way into the stringers which will cause them to rot away and those may have to be replaced. There is all sorts of things that could go wrong with this issue. It's just which steps you want to take to fix it. Me personally I would say to remove that floor, take a sample from different spots on all the stringers see if they are rotted or not, and if so remove them and replace everything. The moisture will get to any exposed wood and start the rotting process.

thanks for your input . After looking it over again, looks like the hull top would have to come of first then the inner liner which is fiberglass andglassed into the hull from front to back and looking into the centre ski storage hole, that the deck is also glued to stringers and bulk head. Looks like it is never ment to be removed.any other ideas? Also if the boat is kept under cover but outside will the water in the foam freeze and expand and possibly crack the hull? thanks

Greetings,

How much work you put into it really depends on how long you plan to keep it. They are not made to be taken apart but absolutely can be taken apart, just takes some time to figure out how and what first.

I just dealt with the frozen foam water issue in my aluminum boat. It didnt cause any cracking on the hull, but it was a nightmare to remove. Once that foam gets wet it starts eating the boat from the inside out.

So again, if your gonna keep it for a year or two i wouldnt worry, if you wanna have it forever take the floor up.

Sorry to hear your new boat is in this condition. In a newer boat like yours there may not be any wood used in the construction of the boat. If the foam is soaked it needs to be removed as it will never dry. You could weigh the boat to see how much water it may have absorbed. They can take on 3-500 lbs of water if the foam has absorbed it. Hope it's not as bad as it sounds.

I just had a another thought, has any one drilled access holes( 8" ) under the sleeper seat and under the front and rear seats that way the are hidden . With these holes you can get the foam out and force dry air through one of the holes. When it is dry ( after about a week or so ) replace the foam.

It would be great if you can show some pictures. That way it may make it easier for suggestions. I am doing some major work on my 1990 Maxum and have observed that on the bow area a pouring foam was used for floation. To my dismay the holes (1" in diameter) that were made for the pouring foam was never plugged. You can see the actual foam through the holes. I have seen on some others that the hole that was made was plugged with the piece of wood which was removed and then glassed over.

as you can see the hull is wavy where it sits on the bunks. Does that mean the foam has deteriated and is not giving any structual support?

some more pics. From these pics you can see the fiberglass floor goes fom the very back all the way to the bow and it is also glued to the strings and bulk heads. The little holes are by the drivers right foot and passengers left foot. Drivers one was dry at the top pass was soaked. One pic shows under the pass bow seat ,you can see a crack.

I would take it to a scale and weigh the boat. Then find out what the factory weight was. That should give you a very good idea of how much water you are looking at. My guess is that you need to cut out the floor and remove all foam, then put a new floor in. Flotation foam typically does not provide any structural support to the hull but if it is full of water it can really weigh the boat down and when on a trailer for any period of time can cause the damage you are seeing. Did you get an inspection before buying this boat?

Re: do I need to remove fiberglass liner to get the water out of 2005 maxum?

ok today I went to the scale and it was 1110kg or 2442 lbs on the axle.
The boat should have a dry wieght of 1991 lbs (boat only ) .
gvwr on trailer is 2960 lbs and a load of 2495
so the trailer must weight 465 lbs
That makes a total of 2466 lbs
I would say the tongue wieght to be about 100 lbs (I can just lift it , sure feels heavy )
that would make the boat and trailer 2552
there is very little gas in it so water weight about 90 lbs

Is it dangerous to have soggy foam?
