Changed prop from a 19p to 21p...now touches trim tab. Does tab have to be replaced or can tab be ground down abit?

If it can be ground down, how much clearance?

They make a flat replacement zinc with no fin. That might be the best solution.

Yes, you can grind it down. Give it about 1/2" of clearance.
Merc makes an offset trim tab anode for outboards that you can replace it with next time.

I would use a beefy file before using a grinder.

Quicksilver also makes an offset tab for this situation:

Re: prop touching trim tab

Can someone explain what the tab does?

My understanding it offsets the torque of the prop. Therefore wouldn't not having one invite steering wheel pull?

My first i/o so all I know so far is 'theory' and no practical....yet.

It does. That is why it's on there. If you have power steering, it MAY not make any difference. If you don't have power steering you absolutely need it.

yep, grind it off. the 4'' angle grinder Don S talks about makes short work of it.

this is how it can turn out..

this grind it off method also appears in the s/m as the proper way to make it work. i think s/m #6. but not sure. am sure i've read it in the s/m though...

Grinding it down a little is no big deal; very common, actually. Mercruiser and after-market suppliers list a number of different fins for Mercruiser drives. Very often the "specified" one is hit by the prop, especially if the prop's been replaced. That's why you always turn the prop by hand, with the engine off, whenever you replace a zinc "fin" or a prop. Grind away! Hy
